Plot

It was raining in autumn, and Percy is puffing along Toby's old line with the train full of fresh tomatoes to take to the market. Suddenly, he ran over a wobbly section of the track. His driver has inspected the track and found out that the earth underneath the track is crumbling. Percy knew that he must tell the Fat Controller.

Then, Percy steamed into the yard and warned Gordon that the tracks on Toby's Line are wobbly. Gordon doesn't care about it, so he grumbled away without remembering Percy's warning. Percy got very cross and thinks that Gordon never listens to him.

Later, Percy steamed to Maithwaite to tell The Fat Controller, but The Fat Controller couldn't listen to him, because he was too busy talking to Thomas. The Fat Controller tells Thomas to collect the prize bull, which is at the farm on Toby's Line. But Percy has warned them that the tracks are wobbly, but he dismisses this and says that it's fine. Percy begins to think that nobody ever listens to him.

Thomas went to the farm. He collected the prize bull and went all the way back to the station. As he approached Toby's line, the rain has made the tracks more wobblier and the landslide of dirt went down on the tracks, in front of Thomas. He tries to stop, but runs into the soft dirt and he was stuck.

Later, in the night the rain was very heavy and Percy felt so worried that Thomas still hasn't returned to the sheds yet. Gordon and James didn't care about it, but Percy's driver believed him. So they went off to find Thomas. As Percy approached Toby's line, his lamp shone brightly in the dark. The tracks creaked and wobbled, but he carried on carefully. At last, he has found Thomas buried in the dirt. The two friends were very happy to see each other and Percy pulled Thomas out of the dirt and helped him back home.

When they arrived at Maithwaite Station next morning, the Fat Controller was waiting for them. Thomas has announced to everyone that Percy has rescued him, and even the bull agrees. The Fat Controller apologises to Percy, and promises that everyone will do a better job of listening to him in future. Percy is very pleased to hear this.
